Holy smoke! Lijiang’s on FIRE!! (Literally)
And so here we were wandering along in the old town, when we noticed that the other half of the street extending all the way down towards Panba was entirely devoid of lights. Electric ones anyway. Any of the shops that were still open, were using candles to illuminate their shops, while crowds of people stood at odd corners, staring out at the mountains, chit-chattering and taking lots of photos.
Of course, till now we still had no idea whatsoever of what was going on, until we took a look for ourselves. And oh wow, what a sight it was. An entire mountain-line, ablaze with flame and smoke.
The main annoyance that the fire caused (being so far away there really was barely any chance of it reaching us at all), was that the electricity in our area was cut off. Luckily however, it is back on now.
On the other hand, the great thing about the lack of electricity was that, with almost no lights on in the city at all, the night sky was amazing, the sky’s stars themselves finally taking this cue to sing, on this very night burned just as brightly as the flame itself.
All guests who were staying at Panba that night got free drinks as a compensation for the lack of electricity, though that was caused by the fire anyway.
Then again, we always need more reasons for free drinks, don’t we? ;)
